Housing Choices for Married & Non-Family Households

The housing markets in various parts of the country yield different housing choices amongst married and non-married/non-family households. Higher proportions are denoted in pink, while lower proportions are denoted in green. This data represents 817 of over 3,000 counties in the United States.

Proportion of Married Households in Renter-Occupied Housing Units

This map illustrates that the West Coast sees a greater proportion of married households who choose to rent as compared to the proportions seen in the eastern half of the country -- with a few notable exceptions: counties near New York City and counties in Florida.

Proportion of Non-Family Households in Owner-Occupied Housing Units

This map looks at the proportion of non-family households in owner-occupied housing units. Florida, Arizona, and New Mexico experience high proportions of such households -- it is possible that the retired community represents some of these households, but the finding bears further investigation.
